Designing the lighting for The Shoes That Were Danced to Pieces was an exciting experience because I enjoy the Grimm Brother fairy tales and this was one of the fairy tales that I had my dad read to me everyday when I was a child so it meant a lot to me to be able to design the lighting for this piece. One of the obstacles I faced with this dance was correlating the lighting to the music. The first piece of music was upbeat from the beginning and got more upbeat as the song went so I had to make sure that I did not give away all my cool tricks at the beginning and not have anywhere to go from there. I was able to overcome this obstacle by keeping the lighting bright and with high contrast at the beginning but by also having enough wiggle room to go up from there. The first song was the same chorus over and over again for the most part so I had to make sure that I made every chorus different and interesting to look at so that the audience would not get bored and would stay focused on the dancers.
Another obstacle I encountered was lighting a white set. I had never lit a set that was all white before so I had to make sure I balanced the contrast of the dancers with the brightness of the set. This was a difficult obstacle to overcome because I enjoyed lighting the set because I felt like it brought the whole piece together and added to the contrast overall but I was able to do a give and take by lowering the brightness of the set immensely and bumping the side lights on the dancers up.

Description: Cinderella

Cinderella was difficult and easy to light because it was so well put together and told the story well. There were a lot of shifts in the music and the story so I made sure to highlight all of them. The story of Cinderella is basically a story about good versus evil so I made sure to highlight that. I used a pastel purple color for Cinderella and her mother's birds and a vivid red for the evil step sisters and their clan. The lighting set the mood for each part of the piece and told the audience if it was a scary, happy, or sad moment. The angles of the colored lights told the story as they mimicked the music in the piece.
I had to work with projections in this piece that were also trying to set the setting for each part of the piece so I had to be careful to hold back and when to come on strong with the light on the cyclorama.
